In this 1990 coming-of-age drama, a high school girl in rural Wisconsin finds an unlikely friend-- a wolf-- when she gets in trouble with the law. When a mysterious woman offers her a chance to escape town, she must decide whether she can live with knowing that there's something out there that could have killed her family. Director Kevin Costner stars as Ray, the local sheriff who helps the heroine learn to trust both people and animals after years of abuse from her family.

In one of its earliest scenes, Ray guides an exhausted Marie across the road on foot to safety from some menacing men in hunting gear when they suddenly come face to face with two wolves. Ray is shocked to see the wolves, but Marie is at ease with them. Ray's next encounter with the wolves occurs when he returns to Marie's cabin after helping her to escape from the men in hunting gear. Ray walks in on two wolves who are eating a dead man in Ray's bed. Ray knows that these are the same two wolves he encountered before because one of them has a distinctive white splotch on his right side, and Ray had noticed it before when they were face to face. Instead of running at Ray like wild animals usually would, the wolves let him know that they have claimed this place as their home now by turning away from him and continuing to eat their kill. Ray does not run for his life because he sees that Marie has taught the wolves to respond to her and that they understand her. Marie tells Ray, "I could go home with you, but I don't want to. I like it better here now." Marie would like to return home and see her mother, but she knows that she would be killed as soon as she entered her front door. Marie tells Ray about the deal that she made with the "wolf-woman", an older woman named Lise who had been referred to by some people as a witch. Lise has agreed to take Marie in until all of her mother's enemies are dead so that Marie can visit her mother without fear of being killed herself. Marie explains that there is a rival clan that wants her mother's land for themselves, and they are sending thugs to kill everyone who dares to stand in their way. Ray tells Marie that he has seen the rival clan's men. He describes them as richer and wearing different clothes than the people who live in town. He says, "They're different from us." Ray does not tell her that he is one of those rich outsiders, but instead he tries to make it sound like he is an ally of Marie's family and will try to keep Marie safe because she is his friend. Ray brings Marie back with him to town, but she soon realizes that Ray was tricked into doing so by Lise. Lise and her clan of wolves ambush and kill all of the men in the rival clan, and Marie knows that Lise will come for her next. At one point, Marie is talking to one of the older children in town about how her mother died. When Marie was about 7 years old, she witnessed a brutal murder that took place on the edge of town that was committed by one of Lise's men. The girl confirms that many people think that Lise is a witch. When the little girl asks if they also think that Marie is a witch, Marie replies "No.
